An Examination of Culture Profiles in a Software Organization Implementing SPI
نویسندگان
چکیده
The capability maturity model integration (CMMI) has become one of the most preferred approaches to software process improvement (SPI). However, the amount of discontinued or delayed CMMIdriven SPI projects is considerable. In this paper we investigate the culture embedded in the CMMI and compare it with the cultures within an implementing organization in Scandinavia by utilising the competing values framework. We search for congruencies in culture profiles and relate the profiles to assessment results in different business areas of the organization. Our research reveals that in spite of similar culture profiles in the business areas, which are significantly different from the culture profile of the CMMI, there is no apparent association with the level of SPI success. Furthermore, even if CMMI based process descriptions are not adapted to the software organisation’s specific culture profile, evidence suggests that SPI success is possible.

متن کاملCompeting values in software process improvement: an assumption analysis of CMM from an organizational culture perspective
The capability maturity model (CMM) approach to software process improvement is the most dominant paradigm of organizational change that software organizations implement. While some organizations have achieved various levels of success with the CMM, the vast majority have failed. In this paper, we investigate the assumptions about organizational culture embedded in the CMM models and we discuss...
متن کاملImplementing software process improvement: an empirical study
In this paper we present survey data characterizing the implementation of SPI in 85 UK companies. We aim to provide SPI managers with more understanding of the critical success factors of implementing SPI. We present an analysis of the critical implementation factors identified in published case studies. We use a questionnaire to measure the use of these factors in ‘typical’ software companies....
متن کاملImplementing Software Process Improvement Initiatives (SPII) - What are the Challenges?
Literature [Gra97] claims that up to 70% of software process improvement initiatives fail to achieve their intended goals. No single organization is likely to have the range of experience necessary to identify these critical factors. We need to examine abroad sample of projects undergoing SPI in order to determine characteristics that successful SPI efforts have in common, characteristics that ...
